Admin./ biographical historyJohn Abernethy was a Surgeon. He was an Assistant Surgeon at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London in 1787, and later became a full Surgeon in 1815. Between 1814 and 1817 he served as Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Abernethy also offered private lectures in anatomy in a house in Bartholomew Close, near to the hospital. The governors of Bart’s built a lecture theatre within the hospital to accommodate his classes. Abernethy retired from his post of Surgeon at Bart’s on 24 July 1827. He continued to lecture until 1828, and resigned his seat on the Court of Examiners at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1829.
