TitleThe Dissecting Room
DescriptionPrint of ‘The Dissecting Room’ by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), published by I C Wilson.
A label on the backing board states that ‘Prior to 1941 this print hung in the old Dissecting Room on the Fifth Floor.’
Rowlandson's drawing has traditionally been associated with the dissecting room in William Hunter's anatomy school in Great Windmill Street. William Hunter is identifiable with wig and glasses in the upper left of the central group. Other putative identifications of individuals in the group, including William's brother John, are harder to verify. Although satirical in its intent, Rowlandson's drawing may also stand as a relatively accurate depiction of the kind of spaces used for private dissection classes, as opposed to anatomical lectures, in Georgian London.
