DescriptionAlbarello drug jar, Spanish, 18th or 19th century.
Albarello drug jar with the inscription 'C:BORACINIA' set into a scrolled cartouche with blue floral decoration on a white ground.
The abbreviated Latin inscription refers to confection of borage. According to the herbalist John Gerard (1545-1612) 'Syrup made of the floures of Borage comforteth the heart, purgeth melancholy and quieteth the phrenticke and lunaticke person. The leaves eaten raw ingender good bloud, especially in those that have been lately sicke.'
