Admin./ biographical historyJohn Hunter was a Surgeon, Anatomist, and Member of the Company of Surgeons. In September 1748, he travelled to London from East Kilbride to join his elder brother, William. John assisted William with his surgical and anatomical teaching, often preparing specimens and dissections. He studied under William Cheselden at Chelsea Hospital, London and Percival Pott at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and studied with Marie Marguerite Bihéron. In 1753, he was elected Master of Anatomy at Surgeon's Hall, where he read lectures. By the 1770s, he had organised his own private lectures on surgical practices. He was also Surgeon at St. George's Hospital, London from 1758. He was also commissioned as an army surgeon in the early 1760s. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767. In 1776, he was appointed surgeon to King George III. In 1783, John moved to Leicester Square, which allowed him to arrange his collection of plant and animal specimens for teaching purposes. In 1786, he was appointed deputy surgeon to the British Army, and in 1790 he was made surgeon general by the then prime minister, William Pitt.
William Hunter was an Anatomist and Physician. He was the elder brother of John Hunter. He studied anatomy at St. George's Hospital, London, specialising in obstetrics. In 1764, he became physician to Queen Charlotte. In 1767, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, and Professor of Anatomy to the Royal Academy in 1768 until 1772. In 1768, he established an anatomy school, theatre and museum in Great Windmill Street, Soho. He collected a large range of materials, including books, manuscripts, prints, minerels, shells, and zoological specimens. He bequethed his collections to the University of Glasgow.

Scope and ContentThis large scrapbook-style album contains material relating to John and William Hunter.
The album contains photographs, postcards, letters, drawings, paintings, press cuttings, manuscript notes, and extracts from journals. Subjects covered include photographs and drawings of Long Calderwood, where William and John Hunter were born; images and descriptions of memorial statues, burials and John Hunter's reinterment; attendance at lectures; information relating to their work and their museums; information relating to their places of residence, for example, Windmill Street, Leicester Square, and Earl's Court; and information about the Hunter family.
Many of the items in the album were collected throughout the twentieth century from various sources, with a number coming from the Stone Collection at the College.
